Two cards in conversation

The Magician + The High Priestess

People often bring two cards with a question about what will happen. Olivia reads a pair as a conversation instead: what each card brings, and what appears between them.

  • Both Major Arcana

Five ways to read this pair

Try one lens at a time. Write a sentence for each before you read anyone else’s version.

  1. Story

Read The Magician first, then The High Priestess, as two scenes of one story. What changes between them?

  2. Contrast

Where do The Magician and The High Priestess pull in different directions, and what does each ask of you?

  3. One colours the other

Let The High Priestess describe the way of The Magician, as an adjective describes a noun. Then swap them.

  4. A shared symbol

No carved symbol is shared here. Look for a gesture, a direction or a colour the two images have in common.

  5. Number, suit and element

Two Major Arcana: two large themes side by side. Which one is the ground, and which the movement?

One reader’s version

The Magician stands with every tool laid out in the open, wand raised; the High Priestess sits still, eyes closed, a scroll half hidden at the figure’s side. Together they draw attention to the balance of doing and knowing: action that grows from listening, and inner knowledge that eventually takes form.

Written for the page of The Magician

The Magician at one and the High Priestess at two are the first pair of the Major Arcana: the raised wand and the resting hands. Together they draw attention to the balance between acting on what you know and listening for what you do not yet know.
