Two cards in conversation

The High Priestess + Two of Swords

People often bring two cards with a question about what will happen. Olivia reads a pair as a conversation instead: what each card brings, and what appears between them.

  • A Major and a Minor
  • The same number

Carved on both cards

  • The round clasp · The medallion over the heart
  • The crescent at the feet · The gold crescent moon

Five ways to read this pair

Try one lens at a time. Write a sentence for each before you read anyone else’s version.

  1. Story

Read The High Priestess first, then Two of Swords, as two scenes of one story. What changes between them?

  2. Contrast

Where do The High Priestess and Two of Swords pull in different directions, and what does each ask of you?

  3. One colours the other

Let Two of Swords describe the way of The High Priestess, as an adjective describes a noun. Then swap them.

  4. A shared symbol

The same symbol is carved on both: “The round clasp” and “The medallion over the heart”; “The crescent at the feet” and “The gold crescent moon”. Follow it from one image to the other: what stays the same, what changes?

  5. Number, suit and element

Both cards carry the number 2: one idea met in two suits. What does each suit do with it?

One reader’s version

The High Priestess also sits still between two sides, eyes lowered and a crescent moon at the feet. Together they turn attention to inner knowing, and ask whether your silence is receptive listening or a way of not looking.
