Two cards in conversation

The Emperor + Four of Pentacles

People often bring two cards with a question about what will happen. Olivia reads a pair as a conversation instead: what each card brings, and what appears between them.

  • A Major and a Minor
  • The same number

Carved on both cards

  • The ivory crown · The crown and level gaze
  • The block-built lapis throne · The squared ivory block

Five ways to read this pair

Try one lens at a time. Write a sentence for each before you read anyone else’s version.

  1. Story

Read The Emperor first, then Four of Pentacles, as two scenes of one story. What changes between them?

  2. Contrast

Where do The Emperor and Four of Pentacles pull in different directions, and what does each ask of you?

  3. One colours the other

Let Four of Pentacles describe the way of The Emperor, as an adjective describes a noun. Then swap them.

  4. A shared symbol

The same symbol is carved on both: “The ivory crown” and “The crown and level gaze”; “The block-built lapis throne” and “The squared ivory block”. Follow it from one image to the other: what stays the same, what changes?

  5. Number, suit and element

Both cards carry the number 4: one idea met in two suits. What does each suit do with it?

One reader’s version

The Emperor is the Major Arcana’s four, a ruler seated in authority. Beside the Four of Pentacles the pair draws attention to structure and control: whether the order you keep is a foundation for others or a wall that holds them out.
