Two cards in conversation

Nine of Wands + Ten of Wands

People often bring two cards with a question about what will happen. Olivia reads a pair as a conversation instead: what each card brings, and what appears between them.

Five ways to read this pair

Try one lens at a time. Write a sentence for each before you read anyone else’s version.

  1. Story

Read Nine of Wands first, then Ten of Wands, as two scenes of one story. What changes between them?

  2. Contrast

Where do Nine of Wands and Ten of Wands pull in different directions, and what does each ask of you?

  3. One colours the other

Let Ten of Wands describe the way of Nine of Wands, as an adjective describes a noun. Then swap them.

  4. A shared symbol

No carved symbol is shared here. Look for a gesture, a direction or a colour the two images have in common.

  5. Number, suit and element

Both are Wands: two steps of one suit. Which comes first in the sequence, and what lies between them?

One reader’s version

In Olivia’s Ten of Wands the bandaged figure returns, bent under one bundle of pale staves with a gold sprig among them. After the Nine’s guarded ring, the pair draws attention to when holding everything becomes carrying everything.

Written for the page of Nine of Wands

The Nine of Wands stands upright inside a ring of staves, holding just one; the Ten walks bent under the whole bundle. Both figures wear a cloth bound round the head. Together they ask when holding on stopped protecting you and began to wear you down.
