Two cards in conversation

Four of Cups + Eight of Cups

People often bring two cards with a question about what will happen. Olivia reads a pair as a conversation instead: what each card brings, and what appears between them.

  • The same suit

Carved on both cards

  • The sheltering tree · Bare trees on the slopes

Five ways to read this pair

Try one lens at a time. Write a sentence for each before you read anyone else’s version.

  1. Story

Read Four of Cups first, then Eight of Cups, as two scenes of one story. What changes between them?

  2. Contrast

Where do Four of Cups and Eight of Cups pull in different directions, and what does each ask of you?

  3. One colours the other

Let Eight of Cups describe the way of Four of Cups, as an adjective describes a noun. Then swap them.

  4. A shared symbol

The same symbol is carved on both: “The sheltering tree” and “Bare trees on the slopes”. Follow it from one image to the other: what stays the same, what changes?

  5. Number, suit and element

Both are Cups: two steps of one suit. Which comes first in the sequence, and what lies between them?

One reader’s version

With the Four of Cups, dissatisfaction appears twice: first as withdrawal beside cups that no longer appeal, then as the decision to walk on. Together they ask whether you are ready to act on a feeling you have been sitting with.
