Five ways to read this pair

Try one lens at a time. Write a sentence for each before you read anyone else’s version.

  1. Story

    Read Five of Pentacles first, then Nine of Pentacles, as two scenes of one story. What changes between them?

  2. Contrast

    Where do Five of Pentacles and Nine of Pentacles pull in different directions, and what does each ask of you?

  3. One colours the other

    Let Nine of Pentacles describe the way of Five of Pentacles, as an adjective describes a noun. Then swap them.

  4. A shared symbol

    The same symbol is carved on both: “The dark house” and “The manor among trees”. Follow it from one image to the other: what stays the same, what changes?

  5. Number, suit and element

    Both are Pentacles: two steps of one suit. Which comes first in the sequence, and what lies between them?

One reader’s version

The Five of Pentacles traditionally shows figures outside in the cold; the Nine shows a figure at ease within the garden. Together they draw attention to how security and belonging are built, and to how the one inside might open a gate for others.
