Two cards in conversation

Ace of Cups + Ace of Swords

People often bring two cards with a question about what will happen. Olivia reads a pair as a conversation instead: what each card brings, and what appears between them.

  • The same number
  • Neutral elements

Carved on both cards

  • Blue peaks on either side · Twin peaks in lapis

Five ways to read this pair

Try one lens at a time. Write a sentence for each before you read anyone else’s version.

  1. Story

Read Ace of Cups first, then Ace of Swords, as two scenes of one story. What changes between them?

  2. Contrast

Where do Ace of Cups and Ace of Swords pull in different directions, and what does each ask of you?

  3. One colours the other

Let Ace of Swords describe the way of Ace of Cups, as an adjective describes a noun. Then swap them.

  4. A shared symbol

The same symbol is carved on both: “Blue peaks on either side” and “Twin peaks in lapis”. Follow it from one image to the other: what stays the same, what changes?

  5. Number, suit and element

Both cards carry the number 1: one idea met in two suits. What does each suit do with it?

One reader’s version

The two Aces set head and heart side by side. Together they ask whether a fresh understanding and a fresh feeling are pointing the same way, and what each could learn from the other.
