Two cards in conversation

The Star + The Moon

People often bring two cards with a question about what will happen. Olivia reads a pair as a conversation instead: what each card brings, and what appears between them.

  • Both Major Arcana

Five ways to read this pair

Try one lens at a time. Write a sentence for each before you read anyone else’s version.

  1. Story

Read The Star first, then The Moon, as two scenes of one story. What changes between them?

  2. Contrast

Where do The Star and The Moon pull in different directions, and what does each ask of you?

  3. One colours the other

Let The Moon describe the way of The Star, as an adjective describes a noun. Then swap them.

  4. A shared symbol

No carved symbol is shared here. Look for a gesture, a direction or a colour the two images have in common.

  5. Number, suit and element

Two Major Arcana: two large themes side by side. Which one is the ground, and which the movement?

One reader’s version

Olivia’s Star carries a small crescent in its pool. In The Moon, the next card, the crescent returns in the sky and a path climbs out of another pool into uncertain light. Together they ask how steady hope travels through what cannot yet be seen.

Written for the page of The Star

The Star is hope renewed under an open sky; the Moon is the night that follows, where hope meets doubt. In sequence they draw attention to what you trusted in clear light and now have to carry through the dark.
